prequel

okay, i’m posting this a bit out of order…i actually did all this shit before i went on my roadtrip, but didn’t want to load a gajillion photos to scroll through. so let’s rewind a bit. we’ll just consider this a prequel of sorts.

um, lots to tell, but only one major food related thing to note- had a semi-impromptu veggie dinner party on the sunday before i left. oh yes, that was the day of the haight street fair – the worst gathering of smelly, douche bag tourists and assorted assholes ever imagined. unfortunately, while grocery shopping for this shindig, i had to navigate my way through this clusterfuck, so this day stands out in my mind as the day i wanted to stab everyone on the street.

anyhow, back to the dinner partay. originally it was going to be veggie costa rican food featuring the famous oatmeal shake from irazu (apparently a very popular mom-n-pop restaurant in chicago). I’ve never had this shake and i’ve never been to irazu, but a bunch of people kept raving about the shake, so obviously i was intrigued. i googled that shit and couldn’t find any decent recipes, so the theme of the dinner changed from costa rican to just plain veggie. no biggie.

main eats: capresi salad with lightly toasted baguette, gruyere and asparagus puff pastry, corn and tomato salad, swiss chard and broccoli mac and cheese.

i thought this meal was both comforting and refreshing. all the fresh veggies made it not so heavy, but the cheesy goodness of the cheddar in the mac and the gruyere in the pastry was straight up comfort. delicious.

**sidebar: i’d just like to say that i don’t know what the fuck is going on with my camera. all of these pictures have some weird tint to them and are hella blurry. apologies.

then again, maybe i’m just taking shitty pictures. i choose to believe it’s the camera. ha.

for dessert iris cooked up a delicious strawberry and balsamic vinegar dessert . came smothered in fresh whipped cream and topped with crushed graham crackers and toasted almonds. seriously, iris?

shot outs to the lady friends who helped cook. and to the male friends who helped eat.
